Use these easy life hacks to use less energy and save more money this season:
1. Keep Up with Tune-Ups
Preventative maintenance is essential to keep your home’s HVAC equipment running safely and efficiently. The rule of thumb to follow is plan on booking service for your cooling and heating systems before or after their peak months of operation.
2. Cook Smarter, Not Harder
Prepare meals without heat at all, like sandwiches and salads to avoid using the stove or oven.
3. Shower in the Evening
Taking a shower at night can cool you down and allow your hair to dry naturally without the aid of a hairdryer or other electric appliance. Give it a try!
4. Unplug from Phantom Power
If you want to save on “phantom power,” unplug electronics that are on standby, or plug them into a power bar. Turn the power bar on when you need it and off when you don’t!
5. Program Your Thermostat
You can save up to 10% annually on energy by adjusting your indoor temperature. Simply program your thermostat a few degrees warmer when you’re asleep or away. Aim for 8 hours a day in the “warm” zone.
6. Run Washing Machines Wisely
The more dishes and clothes you fill these appliances with, the less water is needed. Additionally, use cold water in your clothes’ wash or rinse cycle to save on water heating bills.
7. Enjoy the Outdoors
Not only is it fun and healthy to spend time outside, but you’ll save money on things like television and computer energy costs.
8. Lose the Comforter
If you set your thermostat to be warmer at night, sleep with light sheets instead of a heavy comforter. You’ll experience the same comfort with a lower price tag.
9. Get Grilling
If you’re craving warm food, prepare a meal on the grill! Grilling helps lower your kitchen appliance energy use and added bonus: less dishes to wash!
10. Upgrade to High Efficiency
HVAC technology is constantly improving. Upgrading to a new high-efficiency air conditioner or heating system can help you save big on energy and energy bills for years to come.
